Here are some things you can work on at home for the third trimester of the school year!
We now know the first 42 sight words! The sight word list is attached to show you what words we know. Your child should be able to read, write, and correctly spell the first 25 words! Please keep practicing these at home! All letters and sounds have been introduced since before Christmas. We can also sound out simple words that follow the consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) pattern. Here are some examples:
cat ten bib dog tub hen
rug bag fox sun bed top
six mop wig pot can web
hat sub lip jet hug wag
We are also really working on writing sentences. We know that a sentence always starts with a capital letter, a space goes between each word, and we always need a period or question mark at the end of our sentence.
We are practicing reading and writing numbers from 0-100. We have been graphing since the beginning of the year and should be able to identify the most, the least, and what is equal. We are also working on addition and subtraction problems.
In science we will soon begin talking about life cycles. We will watch butterflies, plants, and maybe even frogs! We will also talk about man-made vs. natural things, as well as living v. non-living things.
In social studies we will learn about goods and services. We will also talk about natural resources we use in everyday life.
Read to your child every day!! Make sure to ask them questions about the stories you read such as who the characters were, what the problem was in the story, and how the story ended. Also, have your child practice retelling the story.
Make sure your child reads to you! Keep the paper booklets we send home and review them periodically. Your children take such pride in their reading skills! Those books are perfect for them to practice their reading skills at home.

Some of the current themes we are covering in the classroom are life cycles and habitats. We just got our tadpoles and caterpillars and are very excited to watch them grow and develop! We are also going to start planting things soon!
Here is a great video you can download and watch about the plant life cycle!
This is a cute film created by first graders about the life cycle of a frog.
